EASTLAND, Texas 鈥 A man is dead after bees swarmed him while mowing, then followed him into his vehicle as he tried to drive away, causing him to crash, Texas police told news outlets.

Officers with the Eastland Police Department responded to a call about a vehicle crash at 4:30 p.m. April 27 , and as they arrived at the scene 鈥渢hey observed the driver of the vehicle was being swarmed by bees,鈥 police told Eastland County Today.

A witness, Chrishae Cooper, said she saw the man and his truck nearby, then 鈥渘ext thing you know I look down and hear a loud boom and he鈥檚 in my parents front yard,鈥 KTXS reported.

The man, later identified as Steven Daniel, was mowing when he apparently disturbed a large honey bee nest near an abandoned building, and they began swarming and stinging him, the outlet reported.

Though he was still being attacked by the bees, officers were able to get him out of his truck and into an ambulance, at which point he lost consciousness, police told KTAB. He died at the hospital due to the stings.

Eastland is a roughly 90-mile drive southwest from Fort Worth .
